Report from children to the UN

Norwegian children have submitted their own report to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child. Read it here.

In addition to the official Norwegian report, the Norwegian Ombudsman for children (Barneombudet) and Forum for the CRC - a network of organizations, institutions and volunteers working with children's rights - have also submitted their own reports to the UN.

Article 12 in the Convention of the Rights of the Child states that "The child has the right to express its views, and these are to be given due weight."

To ensure that Norwegian children and youth were heard directly by the children's committee, the children's hearing was organised by the Norwegian ombudsman for children, the Save the Children Norway and the Norwegian children and youth council (LNU).

59 children between the age of 11 and 18 participated in the children's hearing October 11-12. Lothar Krappmann from the children's committee had been invited to Oslo to hear what Norwegian children and youth had to say, and during the hearing, he learned what it is like to be young in Norway today.

Some of the children had experienced particular violations of their own rights, and some were active in organizations for children and youth. All of them had valuable experience concerning the challenges children in Norway face today, and opinions on how Norway can become a better place to grow up for all children.
